Safety, environment and quality
1 Safety, environmental and quality principles
All operations at Fennovoima are based on principles of safety, the environment and quality, which have been derived from Fennovoima’s ethics.
Safety has an overriding priority for a nuclear power company. Fennovoima’s management commits itself to fostering an exemplary safety culture in all Fennovoima operations.
Everyone – inside and outside of Fennovoima – has a right to safety. Attitudes, patterns of behavior, and skills affecting safety are constantly monitored and improved. Violations of general or internal regulations are not accepted or tolerated at Fennovoima.
In particular, the following considerations are highlighted in our safety thinking and related operations:
• All employees and others affected by Fennovoima’s operations have a right to a safe working and living environment
• The operator, here Fennovoima, has the final responsibility for the safety of its operations
• Safety is taken into account in all decision-making and operations
• Communications and interaction related to safety are organized in a transparent and open manner
2 An environment for people and all of nature
Fennovoima believes that climate change is a great threat to human beings today and far into the future. In Fennovoima’s view, nuclear power is an efficient tool in reducing carbon-dioxide emissions and thus fighting climate change.
It is the obligation of all at Fennovoima to take into account the environment and the environmental effects our operations have or may have.
In particular, the following considerations are highlighted in our environmental thinking and related operations:
• To safeguard and promote the diversity of the global and local environment is an obligation we commit ourselves to
• All our operations are conducted in ways that do not endanger the environment
• We limit the environmental burden we create by applying and utilizing best available technologies and practices
• Our efforts for sustainable development are based on the efficient utilization of natural resources and raw materials
3 Quality as a means to reach targets
Fennovoima has committed itself to world-class quality management aimed at reaching approved targets at all operational levels. Decision-making and operations at Fennovoima are based on analyses of the best possible data and information, i.e. on facts as we recognize them.
Fennovoima’s quality system relies on Finnish legislation, the ISO 9001 standard and - when applicable - the recommendations of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
In particular, the following considerations are highlighted in our quality thinking and related operations:
• Fennovoima implements advanced management systems to ensure the high quality of all operations
• At Fennovoima, we must all commit ourselves to quality management and its continuous improvement
• In matters related to safety and the environment, quality considerations have a particular importance
• Communications and interaction related to quality issues are organized in a manner that encourage continuous learning and improvement
4 Safety, environmental and quality practices
To ensure full compliance with Fennovoima’s safety, environmental and quality principles, the following actions take place:
• These principles are implemented through separate policies on safety, the environment and quality, through more specific guidelines, and through the certifications of Fennovoima’s quality and environmental systems
• Compliance with these principles is controlled and monitored. e.g. through internal and external auditing
• The Board of Directors entrusts the CEO with formulating and implementing the necessary practices to safeguard the company’s compliance with these principles
• Each company function and employee is responsible for the operational compliance with the principles, and effective internal communications and training are crucial tools for achieving this
• Fennovoima conducts an active dialogue on safety, environmental and quality issues with its stakeholders and the rest of Finnish society
• The Board of Directors monitors Fennovoima’s safety, environmental and quality performance at least once a year, based on the CEO’s annual SEQ report
