Pyhäjoki and Its Surroundings
Fennovoima's Hanhikivi nuclear power plant will be located in the municipality of Pyhäjoki. Some 3200 people live there.
Pyhäjoki, located on the shore of the Baltic Sea, is a part of a bigger region known as the Raahe region that also includes Raahe, Vihanti and Siikajoki. Altogether the region has some 35 000 residents. See Pyhäjoki on a map.
Industrial life in the area has long traditions. Rautaruukki steel factory in Raahe is the largest individual provider of industrial jobs in Finland.
Oulu, Finland's 6th biggest city, is about 100 kilometers north from Pyhäjoki. Oulu region has over 200 00 residents. Oulu is one of the technology centers of Finland. One of the country's universities is located in Oulu as well as several research institutes and many international schools.
