Renewables and nuclear power fight climate change
24.01.2008

European Commission’s climate and energy package, published on Jan 23, and additional nuclear power that is to be built in Finland complete each other. Fennovoima regards its nuclear power plant project as an essential part of Finland’s effort to reach the climate targets.

The biggest threat the human kind faces today is climate change. Fighting against it is the most important challenge for the next decades. The only way climate warming can be slowed down is to decrease carbon dioxide emissions. Unfortunately, EU’s climate and energy package does not promote this target sufficiently because the actions proposed are limited to increasing renewable energy production.

All who are concerned about the climate change should now act in order to ensure the requirements set for EU’s energy production would be based on the carbon dioxide emissions of various energy production modes. Nuclear power, which is emission-free, should be included in the studies as a production mode of its own along with renewable production and emission-generating production.

In addition to efforts to save energy, nuclear power and renewable energy sources are essential methods for controlling climate change. The narrow perspective of the European Commission ignores this fact.
