Individual decision to be made for each nuclear power application

The daily newspaper Kaleva reports that the government is going to make an individual decision for each of the nuclear power plant applications, that is of the applications of Fennovoima, Fortum and TVO.

Riku Huttunen, Deputy Director General for Energy at the Ministry of Employment and the Economy, says that the government is going to handle the applications in one session but formally the applications are processed individually. A decision, positive or negative, is to be given for each application and the positive decisions will be processed by the Parliament.

According to the Nuclear Act, the Parliament can either accept or reject a positive decision of the government. This means that the Parliament can cut the number of positive DiP’s but cannot increase the number of licences proposed by the government.

Of parties in the government, the National Coalition Party is willing to give a licence for all three applicants. The Center Party has proposed one or two new nuclear power plants. Mauri Pekkarinen, Minister of Economy, presents the issue to the government and he is apparently in favor of one new reactor. The Greens are against new nuclear power.
